Prevention and Wellbeing
Keeping a distance from ill people. Flu symptoms can be transmitted on a person-to-person basis, by secretions that may be in the air around ill people, on their hands or surfaces they have touched. Therefore, during their winter vacation, as well as during the rest of the year, Josh and his friends should avoid “close contact” with ill people if they do not want to come down with the flu.
Good hygiene prevents transmission. Maybe you remember your grandmother’s advice that was so hard to put into practice when you were a kid: “Wash your hands!” Washing your hands frequently, especially before meals or preparing food, after using the toilet and after having contact with a person with flu, is a key factor to prevent transmission of cold and flu symptoms.
Avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose as much as possible. Most of us don’t realize it, but most of us inadvertently do this, especially when we are not paying attention and are having fun, like Josh and his friends during their vacation. However, becoming more aware of this simple measure will stop you from catching viruses that may be on your hands.
Reduce stress. Easier said than done, but it has been proven that stress reduces our natural defenses against the most common germs, as well as being a factor in more serious illnesses. Josh and his friends are doing a great job of reducing stress by taking their fun vacation together.
Be aware of your habits. There are lots of daily habits that play a part in our natural defenses against the most common germs. It is important that we sleep an adequate number of hours each night, eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of water during the day. And doing physical exercise... a tip Josh and friends gladly followed.
NOTE: These recommendations can be followed by any person who might suffer flu like symptoms.
